Exceeding your vehicle's weight ratings can cause loss of control, trailer sway, brake failure, structural damage to your truck or hitch, voided insurance coverage, and death — yours or someone else's. 1. Estimates Only, Not an Engineering Certification

Can I Tow It? compares the trailer, occupant, and cargo weights you enter against the ratings you enter. It has no knowledge of your actual truck, hitch, or trailer. Manufacturer ratings vary significantly by model year, trim, cab and bed configuration, engine, axle ratio, and option package — and published brochure tow ratings typically assume a stripped-down truck carrying nothing but a single 150-lb driver, a configuration no real trip has ever seen. A wrong or optimistic input produces a wrong or optimistic verdict. Verify every rating on your own vehicle: the yellow tire-and-loading sticker, the silver certification label, the receiver stamp, and your owner's manual or manufacturer towing guide for your exact configuration.

2. The Only Truth Is a Scale

Estimated tongue weights, estimated curb weights, and "typical" cargo allowances are planning tools, nothing more. The only numbers that settle whether your combination is safe are real ones: load the truck and trailer the way you actually travel and weigh the combination at a CAT scale (available at most truck stops for a few dollars). Weigh the truck alone, the truck with the trailer attached, and check axle-by-axle weights against your axle ratings. Do this before your first long trip and again whenever your loading changes materially.

3. Tongue Weight Percentages Are Rules of Thumb

The 10–15% tongue-weight range this tool uses for travel trailers is a widely cited rule of thumb, not a law of physics or a guarantee against sway. Actual tongue weight depends on how the specific trailer is designed and how you load it — water tanks, batteries, propane, and gear placement can swing it hundreds of pounds. Measure your actual tongue weight with a tongue scale or at a CAT scale rather than relying on a percentage.

4. Every Rating Binds Independently

Your truck's payload, its tow rating, its GVWR and GCWR, each axle's GAWR, the hitch receiver's weight-carrying and weight-distributing ratings, the ball mount and ball ratings, and your tires' load ratings are separate, independent limits — the lowest one governs. Passing four of them means nothing if you exceed the fifth. This tool only checks the ratings you enter; components you did not enter (tires, ball, ball mount, axles, safety chains) still bind and must be checked separately.

5. Know Your State's Laws

Many U.S. states and Canadian provinces impose their own requirements on towed combinations: independent trailer brakes above a certain trailer weight (commonly 1,500–3,000 lb), breakaway switches, safety chain standards, mirror requirements, speed limits while towing, and special or endorsed driver's licenses above certain combined weights. Check the laws of your state and every state you will tow through. This tool does not evaluate legal compliance.
